How it works

Every firearm measured the same way

  1. 1

    Each firearm is profiled

Every one of the 19,914 firearms was rated on a long list of questions about its size, mechanism, performance, and design.

  2. 2

    9 dimensions

A psychometric model condenses those ratings into 9 dimensions, each scaled from −4 to +4 around the average firearm. The sliders on this page set targets on those same scales.

  3. 3

    Two ways to match

Describe what you want finds the firearms whose profile sits closest to your settings. Start from guns you like finds the firearms whose full rating profile correlates most strongly with the ones you named.
